This webinar takes a deep dive into the challenges associated with modeling the behavior of minutiae in a fingerprint. These challenges have resulted in the largely unstable performance of many fingerprint statistical models. Alice will present a brief overview of how scientists use mathematics to describe and predict the natural world.
From this general discussion, the lecture will cover the fundamental differences in the markers modeled for forensic DNA analysis (alleles) and the markers modeled for fingerprints (minutiae). The lecture will then turn to the findings from three key studies that illustrate the incredibly complicated dependencies of minutiae in fingerprints.
Once these dependencies have been described, Alice will provide a general overview of fingerprint statistical models. If you have ever been asked or if you have ever wondered, “Why aren’t you providing population statistics like DNA?” This webinar will help you understand.
- The attendee will be able to explain why mathematical models are inherently limited.
- The attendee will be able to describe the difference between independent and dependent variables.
- The attendee will be able to describe the variation in minutiae densities between the center and periphery of a fingerprint.
- The attendee will be able to describe variation in minutiae orientations based on pattern type and handedness.
- The attendee will be able to list the population distribution of patterns found on fingers.
- The attendee will be able to explain the relationship between a probability of random correspondence model and a likelihood ratio model.
- The attendee will be able to explain the difference between a score-based model and a likelihood ratio model.
- The attendee will be able to describe at least three limitations of statistical models.
Prior to the webinar (typically 1 – 2 days) you will receive an email link to a file or folder to download the handout and any relevant supplemental information. The main course handout can also be downloaded from the webinar platform at the time of the webinar.
Assessing Learning Outcomes (a.k.a. Quiz)
In order to verify these learning outcomes have been achieved, there is a 20-question quiz via SurveyMonkey at the end of each webinar. Attendees must score a minimum of 70% on the quiz in order to receive a training certificate for the webinar. Please note the quizzes are open-book and poll questions are given during the webinar to prepare attendees for the quiz.
