This 5-day workshop (36 IAI approved latent print and tenprint training hours) will allow attendees to explore all regions of the ridged skin of the hands and feet. Lectures and in-class practice exercises for the distal phalange, lower phalanges, sections of the palm, and sections of the feet are provide during the live online instruction time (daily lectures). After the only instruction time, this knowledge is reinforced via challenging comparison exercises for each section of the ridged skin.
This 36-hour workshop will introduce all regions of the friction ridge skin with a focus on the similarities and differences in shape, size, creases, pattern elements, ridge flows, ridge counts, ridge lengths, ridge thicknesses, and ridge curvature. Building robust regional mental models should increase comparison efficiency via faster recognition of the various parts of the hands and feet and decreases risk of error by recognizing the appropriate conditions to widen search parameters (check other regions of the skin or alternative orientations).Â
A thorough understanding of the skin will also permit better assessment of the completeness of exemplar prints – has every region I need for this comparison been recorded in the exemplars? Comparison exercises will promote the recognition of ambiguity in diagnostic search information and incomplete exemplars, emphasizing appropriate inconclusive and exclusion decisions. We will also discuss the benefits and limitations of written procedures that may help facilitate the decision-making process.
Attendees will be provided three digital files for the handouts for the course. The files include the lecture notes, a workbook, and exemplar prints. The fee for this course covers one copy of the course files for the registered attendee and is not a license for an agency or individual to disseminate the course materials to other individuals or agencies. If an agency would like a license to disseminate the course materials to other employees within the agency, please contact Alice White for pricing.
